FAQ

How do I prepare my slides?

Format: For your presentation, please prepare exactly 20 slides in one of the following formats:

    • PDF
    • Keynote
    • JPG or PNG (1024×768 pixels)
    • Google Slides
    • Power Points (PPT)

Please name the files “yourname01”, “yourname02”, etc. in order of their appearance. Note the “01” zero padding. We will construct and time everyone’s presentations into one loop.

Note: if you would like to include video, keep in mind that the video must be exactly 15 seconds long, and you must number/label the video file according to the naming scheme above.

How and when do I submit my slides?

Submit your slides on/before Tuesday July 10, 2018. We will be providing access to a shared folder.

What is Ignite?
An Ignite talk is a short presentation of 5 minutes where 20 slides are automatically advanced every 15 seconds.

Ignite talks focus on the speaker with visuals to back up the orated content. Ideally, your slides should contain a minimal amount of text. Each 15-second slide allows a presenter to speak about 2 full sentences at a comfortable speed. You should practice your talk a lot before CLS to acclimate yourself to the automatic timing.

For some examples, see:
The Plight of the Digital Chicken, by Patrick Davison

How to Buy a New Car, by Rob Gruhl

The talks tend to be narrative (video 1), instructional (video 2), or anecdotal. Each presentation is comprised of static slides (some include videos or moving elements, though it is very rare).
